Consultant for Blackwell Bible Commentaries authors: Cantor Helen Leneman. Dr. Leneman received her PhD in 2004 at the University of Amsterdam under Prof. Athalya Brenner. The title of her thesis is ‘The Scroll of Ruth Re-told through Librettos and Music: Biblical Interpretation in a New Key.’ She has written and lectured extensively in Europe and in the U.S. on musical interpretations of Ruth and other biblical women’s narratives. She is the author of The Performed Bible: The Story of Ruth in Opera and Oratorio (Sheffield Phoenix, 2007) and Love, Lust, and Lunacy: The Stories of Saul and David in Music (Sheffield Phoenix, 2010). Dr. Leneman has worked for many years as a professional pianist and singer. In addition to her professional training as a cantor at Hebrew Union College, she also worked as an opera chorister for many years in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. Dr. Leneman is fluent in several languages and currently lives in Rome.
